The progressive coastal college community of San Luis Obispo (SLO) is a touring band’s oasis. Nestled in the rolling green hills of California’s Central Coast and located midway — almost a perfect four hours — between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the community makes for an excellent stopping point for any band traveling up Highway 101. California Polytechnic State College is the city centerpiece, flooding the area with 20,000 students and faculty during the academic year. The college boasts an active liberal arts community, KCPR — a nationally acclaimed college radio station which CMJ considers one of the top fifty in the country — and a stunning downtown area. One of SLO’s most celebrated events is its weekly farmer’s market which was actually California’s first. Growing each year, literally thousands fill the downtown streets to experience all the live music, food and visual arts that bolster SLO’s flourishing culture.
