The Everyday Visuals

Hit the South

By Chris Pappas (vocals/guitar)

Day 1: Somewhere in Virginia- Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Leaving day. We left our home on Tuesday without any plan for where we would sleep that night. It’s always amusing to me how the accents change from gas stop to gas stop. Each time we filled up, the word “pen” seemed to get more syllables (and started to sound like peein’). If you are wondering how the sleeping situation worked out, it went fine. By fine, of course, I mean we slept in the van parked in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

Day 2: Nashville, Tennessee- Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Hey Nashville! It was all our first time to Tennessee, and we were pleasantly surprised how nice the scenery was. Note: Nothing brings people together quite like music and a keg.

Day 3: Starkville, Missouri- Thursday, April 24th, 2008

“That’s very interesting music, Marty.” Do you all remember that scene in Back To The Future, where Marty plays “Johnny B. Goode” at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance? The song reaches its climax, and Marty looks out to a sea of confused, if not downright angry faces? Yeah, the show kinda went like that. P.S. I actually quoted the movie during the show and told the crowd that “their kids are gonna love it” — to which our soundman overheard someone reply, “If my kids liked this, I’d kick ‘em.” Outstanding!!

Day 4: Mobile, Alabama- Friday, April 25th, 2008

Redemption song. We just put Mississippi out of our minds. (Or maybe we should say, we drank Mississippi out of our minds...) We pass a giant ominous metal cross that, despite the size, still doesn’t manage to save our souls. The show goes splendidly, however, and we drive through the night back to Nashville.

Day 5: Nashville, Tennessee - Pt. II- Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Nashville the second time around is even better. The show was awesome, and after we went to a place called Café Coco. I, in a giant miscalculation, order a veggie burger instead of the grilled cheese with pesto. I never quite recover from the loss.

Day 6: Somewhere in Virginia (Again)- Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Rain, rain, go away. (Seriously, fuck off rain.) We head out of Nashville. The entire drive is drenched by the worst rain I’ve seen in a while. It’s so treacherous that we witness a tractor-trailer truck careen off the road and flip onto its side in a ditch. We decided to take it slow from that point on.

Day 7: Monday, April 28th, 2008

Of WVOF, major seven chords and plagal cadences. We play in-studio at WVOF; the host and staff are great. We sing a new station ID, which, if you are curious, goes like

this: Cmaj7 - F (6/4) - C
