Store Profile
Finklestein Music History and Service

Though it started off as a one-room department store, selling everything from clothing to cutlery, Finklestein’s is now known for its service and selection in musical instruments. Having just celebrated its 100- year anniversary in 2006, the store has also doubled (at least) in size, taking over another store space in its long lifetime. The store sells guitars, basses, amps, percussion, pro audio, DJ equipment and keyboards, as well as offering lessons for the instruments sold.

Venue Profile
Juggling Gypsy Hookah
Bar & Entertainment Parlor
Colorful and Eclectic

Juggling Gypsy is a home away from home for its regular customers and any given night one never knows what to expect, save for atmosphere, a variety of beers and all types of music – whether its coming from upstate New York or just down the street. The Juggling Gypsy is low lit, cozy and feels ripped from Morocco or Nepal’s more colorful parts of town. Settled on the outskirts of downtown Wilmington, the venue is home to many a traveling performer or band, and has been a regular venue for The Brothels, Stephen Sellers, avant-garde films, social discourse and the occasional circus. The stage is on the floor inches from patrons. The setting is intimate, like a living room, and you can sit in front or on raised tables for viewing and enjoying a hookah. From rock acts like citizen and Prevaillion to the weekly Fire & Drum nights, Juggling Gypsy is an original, run by folks who like it different and like it weird. Their motto: smoke, drink, talk to strangers.

In the News
- The Soapbox, Wilmington’s largest music
venue, has now turned their well-known annual event into a miniature monthly version called “WE Fest Fridays.” Five stages will provide musical entertainment (three band stages, an acoustic stage, and a DJ room), alongside an art opening, all for the admission price of a mere dollar. Each evening will also start things off with an underground film screening. The first WE Fest Friday was held on August 22.

- The Be Yr Own Hero Movement, a very loosely organized group of young
self-proclaimed anarchists (yes, that’s right), are helping to breath new life into a socio-political school of thought that they say has been lead astray from it’s true meaning over the many years. Focusing on virtues of self-reliance, pro-charity, and anti-big business, the group held its Be Yr Own Hero Festival at The Soapbox this year on September 26-27. Bands with a similar DIY aesthetic helped entertain the crowds, while workshop sessions were held and free food was served. The group still holds its “Really, Really Free Market” at Greenfield
Lake, the last Sunday of every month, starting sometime around noon.

- Wilmington rapper Haji P. released his EP, Monkey Junk, in August, despite
having never met the producers of his beats, Fatman and Tropical. The two beatmakers live in the UK and have only “met”
Haji P. over the internet. Sticking to the international web-connection theme, the
cover art for Monkey Junk was designed by Diamond P., an artist from Paris. Even with an ocean separating Haji P. from his collaborators, the rapper guarantees an album with clever lyrics and speakerthumping beats.

- Indie rock outfit Labeling Deloris released their first full-length CD on July 26. Titled I Want Everything, the CD is the much-anticipated follow up to the band’s 2006 EP For The Sake of Deloris. The band played Wilmington Unplugged on September 2 in support of the new release.

- New psychedelic band Sci-Fi made a name for itself with the release of its debut album this summer. The album was recorded at Earth One Studio in Atlanta with producer Alex Ginz, and features guest appearances by members of Yo Momma’s
Big Fat Booty Band, Laura Reed and Deep Pocket, Elemental Harmonics and Benjamin Forehand. Sci-Fi toured hard all summer, including stops at the Fat Fest in Wabasha, Minn. and the Muse Fest in Ithaca, N.Y.
The band will be playing at The Whiskey on October 31.
