Columbia, SC

This state capital is a great stop between big cities like Atlanta (three hour drive) and Charlotte (an hour and a half) or the North Carolina Triangle of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill (three and a half hours). Though it is the biggest city in South Carolina, Columbia has a large amount of green space and a very welcoming environment. A lot of money has gone into the city recently to revitalize more run-down areas like Five Points, meaning there’s more foot traffic around the city. The city’s music scene is thriving, from hip-hop artists like Danny Swain (Southeast Performer‘s March cover star) to singer-songwriter Danielle Howle to Everything After, whose 2007 release The Lampstore Sessions received the most airplay of any unsigned artist in the country.
