Colour Revolt
Celebrating the success of April release Plunder, Beg, and Curse, tours with The Breeders and Snowden as well as a cover from yours truly (June 2008), Colour Revolt took a headlining jaunt around the Southeast, pulling in crowds from Memphis to Bonnaroo.
June 5 — Memphis, TN
After a marvelous dinner with Len’s folks at the Rendezvous and in front of a glorious and enthusiastic crowd at the Hi-Tone, we managed to kind of suck. All apologies, Memphis. By far the worst show of the tour, and yet good times were had, and even more good times were to be had in the coming days.
June 6 — Hattiesburg, MS
We played at one of my favorite bars in America, the Thirsty Hippo. The sound was awesome and we had a packed house, which is pretty good for summertime. Seriously, the Hippo is one of our favorite places to play. Dent May and His Magnificent Ukelele opened to maximum ownage. Not to mention delicious vegetarian cuisine at the Side Door Cafe. Great show.
June 7 — Pensacola, FL
Lemme tell ya, Pensacola is wild. Kids go nuts there. We all got sweaty and shirtless with a ton of our friends and played one of the nastiest, most fun shows in awhile. I swear I’d play Pensacola every week if I could. Afterwards we hit up this bar called the Azalea, where I received a mighty stout drink from one of my favorite bartenders ever. Her name is Barbara. Tip her well.
June 8 — Tampa, FL
A surprisingly great show. I kicked butt in Galaga for awhile and ate this delicious BLT from a Cuban deli. The absolute highlight was staying with Melissa and Matt from History, the band who opened along with Mouse Fire. A terrific band and wonderful people, they had the greatest array of pets ever, including this adorable half-bulldog, half-chihuahua named Lilo. No kidding. Big body, tiny head. A-dorable. In other news, I ransacked their CD collection and beat most of the Dracula X Chronicles on PSP.
June 9 — Orlando, FL
Best show of the tour. We were totally thrilled by the turnout. The Social is a great-sounding venue, and they have that delicious pizza place next door. Our friend Ben Hamola showed up, as did my buddy Will Cole. We got to tour the Hard Rock Café warehouse, where we saw Prince’s guitar and a check Madonna once wrote to her masseuse. It’s weird how there are all those shrines worshipping rockstars all over the country, especially when you consider that most rockstars are the worst people ever. Sure, there are exceptions, of course, but think about it. It’s like garish celebrity churches hawking memorabilia. I dunno. It’s just a weird concept.
June 10 — Jacksonville, FL
What did we learn from this show? Can’t rightly say. The Mediterranean place next door was pretty delicious though.
June 11 — Athens, GA
Love Athens. Coolest town ever. Hung out with our buddy Andrew Houston and rocked out with Gringo Star and Twin Tigers. The Forty Watt is a damn good venue with wonderful, patient sound guys. Despite multiple string breaks, a faulty amp, and a fried monitor, we had a great show. And people actually laughed at Sean’s jokes. As in, our onstage bantering wasn’t THAT awkward. Which is a pretty big deal for us.
June 12 — Atlanta, GA
This show ruled. Tons of old friends, made some new ones. It’s always a joy to play for a packed, psychotically-enthused house. I had this weird ear-ringy thing going on where it sounded like I had a tree full of frogs croaking and belking in my skull. It was so distracting I have no idea how we played, but everyone assured me it was good. Had a nice pre-show conversation about the dead baby tree in Blood Meridian with the dudes from Deep Vibration.
June 13 — Bonnaroo
This was sweet as hell. We saw Metallica play, and, despite the fact that the crowd were relatively unethusiastic, they ruled. I felt like a twelve year old. They even played “Last Caress.” It was totally wicked. Oh yeah, we played too. A tight, rocking set right before the Raconteurs kicked it off. We had a total blast, and it was a hell of a way to end a tour. On a side note: isn’t it hilarious, at festivals, that when you go to the “artists’ tent,” the actual performing artists aren’t there? There’s just a bunch of dudes in cargo shorts. And us. We’re there. Because there’s free food and shoes and stuff. So come say hey. We can split a Choco Taco and talk about good things.
After a brief respite, the band have headed back on tour. For the rest of the summer and into fall the Oxford, Miss. boys will be heading into the Midwest, up to Canada, off to the West Coast and over to Texas.
