A Drummer’s Paradise

Tampa’s All Pro Percussion celebrated its one-year anniversary in July. Drummers of all skill levels will find the equipment they need here. The store carries many of the top names in percussion, including DW Drums, Gretsch, Meinl, Pacific Drums, Roland V-Drums, Sabian and Zildjian. In addition, the store boasts a cymbal room with a vast selection of cymbals to compliment any style of music. All Pro Percussion also has two teaching studios, offering lessons in basic techniques, drum set and hand percussion. They occasionally hold clinics featuring top drummers, including one hosted by Mark Schulman this past summer.

The Crowbar opened in 2006 and is one of Tampa’s newest music venues. Former Atlanta resident Tom DeGeorge opened the Crowbar with his partner Devin Norton after the venue he was managing, Tampa’s Masquerade, shut down. Previously, DeGeorge managed Atlanta’s Masquerade.

Have Gun, Will Travel showcased its alt-country tunes at the Atlantis Music Conference and Festival in Atlanta on September 19. The band showed off its sophomore album Casting Shadows as Tall as Giants, an album that is stylistically and thematically linked to the Wild West. The band has had success in Tampa in the past; its song “Come All Ye Sinners” was the number one song on Tampa’s WMNF/88.5 FM Community Radio for four weeks in 2007.

Tampa band Rebel Pride appeared on CMT’s reality TV show Biggest Redneck Wedding Ever on August 30. Tom Arnold hosts the show, and Rebel Pride was the wedding band for the lucky couple. The episode featured music from the band’s most current release, All Points In Between, including the album’s single “Girls Wanna Dance.”

The Prospect had an intense tour this summer. The pop-punk outfit played the Ernie Ball and Skull Candy Stages at this year’s Warped Tour. The band’s debut EP, America, was released earlier in 2008 and was produced by Eddie Reyes of Taking Back Sunday. George Fullan, who has worked with Taking Back Sunday, The Rolling Stones and Action Action, recorded the EP. Since being released, America has sold more than 11,000 copies.

Tampa show promoters I-Tal Vibrations hosted the Nu-Urban Project on August 17. The goal of the show was to raise awareness about urban renewal. Sci-Fi, The Hip Abduction, Cope, Christie Lenee & the FunkGrass Groove, Conscious Sound System, The Mantics and DJ Craig Heneveld all performed. I-Tal Vibrations has put recordings from the show on its website.

The 2008 Tampa Music Awards will take place November 12 to 13 at the historic Kapok Pavilion. On November 12, The Tampa Music Conference begins at 10:30 a.m. The conference will bring together several dozen music professionals from companies like Jive Records, Def Jam and EMI Music Publishing. The awards will be on the next night at 7 p.m. The awards recognize creativity in seven genres of music: rock, country, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, Christian and Latin. The event will be broadcast live over the Internet and on television through the local Tampa CW 44 affiliate. Fans and artists will be able to nominate and vote for the awards through text messaging. Tickets for the conference range from $35 to $70 and $99 to $299 for the awards. Tickets are available at the official website.
