Studio Profile
First Street Studio Heavy Music in a Relaxed Environment
First Street Studio is located just outside Chattanooga in Cleveland, Tenn. The studio records mostly post-hardcore and metal. Owner Tyler Orr, who formerly ran a small label and has been in several bands, loves working with young bands.
“I remember going into record for the first time and not knowing a thing about it,” he says. “I see guys come in the studio like that sometimes, young and not understanding a thing about the process of recording. I am excited to be a part of the kids’ musical journey and try to be as helpful as possible in the early stages of learning how to be a band.”
Nestled in a historic downtown area and located in very old building with an extremely high ceiling, First Street provides a unique and raw sound for its clients. Orr makes it his personal mission to make each recording as un-produced as possible. There’s less attention spent on the technology and more focus on the sound the instruments are making. That being said, Orr likes to do a bit of experimenting in the studio, exploring new techniques and ways of recording that best suit the artist.
First Street offer a $40 hourly rate, but a fee is usually negotiated for a longer project. Be sure to have a chat with Orr first, to see what sort of needs your band has. That way you can get a better price for the entire project, as opposed to an hourly price that might keep you under pressure. Also, the studio offers free lodging for out-of-town acts.
