Mantis Records

Understanding that independent acts making their first record may not have thousands of dollars to spend on a record, the owners of Mantis Records do what they can to make the recording experience affordable and enjoyable. Quality pieces of equipment and comfortable yet fugal surroundings make the studio comprehensive and relaxed. Bands can feel at ease in the hands of Mitch Webb, the only working engineer/producer in the state of South Carolina who is a certified ProTools operator in addition to having a degree in sound design from The Savannah College of Art and Design. Gear: “I use Protools LE with the DIGI 002 along with the Apogee Ensemble so I have plenty analogue ins for live recording and quality conversion,” says owner Mitch Webb. “I route all my signals through my trusty Berhinger 24-channel console. I use the Rode NT 1-A condenser for vocals. I have some Sennheizer E 609 mics for amps and toms, and the classic SM 57s for everything else.”

The WindJammer: A Seaside Venue With a Wild Reputation

At first glance, The Windjammer looks like a party paradise (see: Bud Bikini Bash), but it’s actually one of Charleston’s best music venues. Founded in 1972 by two brothers, the venue has seen many great acts like John Mayer, Edwin McCain, Big Head Todd and the Monsters and Cracker grace its stage. Today, you may see Tift Merritt play one night and The Explorers Club play the next.

To book a gig, email Bobby Ross with your website, which should have your music, contact information, tour calendar and frequently played venues. If your website does not have the information above, include it in the email. Be sure to have the name of your band in the subject line.

Cover band Cloud 9 has been playing several gigs the past month, mainly in Charlotte, NC, and is playing at the WildWing Café in downtown Charleston on Sept. 20. The band is not your average “granddad” cover band playing old and classic rock songs of the golden era, but also covers pop songs of contemporary acts like Justin Timberlake, 311, Gorillaz and Lil’ Jon.
