Ampeg Reissue ADA4 See Through Bass
Price: $1899
Ampeg displayed their new replica of the original Dan Armstrong “plexi” bass at this year’s NAMM. The classic clear, diamond-cut acrylic body that made it an iconic piece of equipment over 30 years ago is back with this faithful reproduction. The bass features a maple neck with 24 frets inlaid into an Indian rosewood fingerboard, which gets up to two octaves before it reaches the body. This version has a bolt-on neck joint and a solid rosewood bridge with compensated brass saddles, which couples directly to the bridge plate for improved tone and sustain. The bridge plate also doubles as the string-holder, or “tail piece.” The pickups are by Kent Armstrong, who designed the original pickups in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and employ a stacked design that uses a tone control to combine signals from the treble and bass coils. The bass also includes nickel Grover tuners, vintage rotary volume and tone pots with a two-way switch and an authentic Formica pick guard with aluminum backing for electronic shielding and durability.
