RECORD REVIEW: Brothers McCann
Different Colors
By: Amanda Macchia
July 2010

Brothers McCann is certainly impressive in a few key ways. Their newest album Different Colors showcases their ability to combine a strong musical backdrop with catchy, fun, and intriguing songwriting tactics. Songs like "She Thinks" and "Different Colors" show that they can be diversely creative. "Different Colors" brings together elements of jam, funk, and soul-defying laughter, while "She Thinks" has lyrics that will imprint themselves into your mind. The first half of their album is the strongest, laden with poppy tracks that are easy to move to and fun to sing along with. As the album moves on the songs become softer and more predictable. Brothers McCann have played it a bit too safe. I found myself waiting for a punch in the face, or for Pat and Mike McCann to hit those back bending notes they always seem to when they play live.

Contrasting the sound on their album to the sound they project during live performances only leaves one wanting more. They are fully capable of it. There isn't enough POP in Different Colors to truly showcase the kind of energy found at the heart of Brothers McCann. While Different Colors affirms the presence of an eclectic, natural talent in the band that can be poppy, serious and soulful all at once, it also reminds me how powerful this troupe can be when their live performances are compared to their recordings. I hope they turn it up a notch next time. I have no doubts they can blow everyone right out of the water. (Low Sodium Music)
